Suffering from Cold sores/ Canker sores?

A cold sore, also known as a fever blister is caused by the reactivation of a virus called HSV-1. It is typically seen as a cluster of small blisters which quickly rupture to form small ulcers. Over time, the ulcerations extend to the skin around the mouth and become covered with crusting or a scab. Many lesions are commonly preceded by an itching, burning or tingling sensation.

A Canker sore or Aphthous Ulcer is an autoimmune response which damages the skin inside the mouth. They can be seen on the inside of the lips, cheeks, or underneath the tongue. Canker sores can vary in size but both the cold sore and canker sore can be triggered by sunlight, physical trauma and stress.

What is the best way to treat this problem?

Dr. Teri Lovelace’s office can use state of the art Laser Technology for cold sores preventing or minimizing the eruption of the oral herpetic lesions while reducing pain and helping them heal faster. The Periolase Laser treats the lesion by hovering over it in order to kill the virus and stimulate your body’s own healing potential. Treatment lasts about 15 minutes, is pain free, and does not require any numbing. Most patients feel instant relief and some even report up to a 3 year interval between break outs after laser treatment.

EARLY treatment is the best treatment

Cold sores and canker sores are best treated at the beginning stages. If treated EARLY, a cold sore may not even create a blister or ulcer. If you feel an itching, tingling, burning or numb sensation signaling a breakout lesion starting, call our office immediately. Treatment is most successful if done in the first 24-48 hours of these symptoms appearing.

If your cold or canker sore is ulcerated, laser treatment can still be beneficial to speed healing and decrease pain. Once the sore has created a scab or crust, laser treatment is no longer effective.

Please call Dr. Teri Lovelace’s office at 325-695-1131 if we can help you or someone you know by using this pain free and effective treatment.
