Below, we have compiled answers to some of the most common questions we receive about our services. We hope this information helps you better understand your dental care needs.
General Questions
What services does your office offer?
Our practice specializes in periodontics, focusing on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease. Our primary services include dental implants, denture implants, treatment for gingivitis and periodontitis, crown lengthening, soft tissue and gum grafts, and innovative laser procedures such as LANAP.
Gum Disease
What are some signs of gum disease?
Common signs of gum disease include gums that are swollen, red, tender, or bleed easily, especially when brushing or flossing. Other symptoms can be persistent bad breath, gums that have pulled away from the teeth, sensitive teeth, and changes in how your teeth fit together when you bite.
What is the difference between gingivitis and periodontal disease?
Gingivitis is the earliest, mildest form of gum disease, characterized by gum inflammation, and is often reversible with proper oral hygiene. Periodontal disease is a more advanced stage where the infection has spread below the gum line, leading to bone and tissue loss. While gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, not all gingivitis does.
What should I do at home to care for diseased gums?
Proper at-home care is crucial for managing gum disease. This includes brushing thoroughly twice a day, flossing daily to remove plaque between teeth and below the gum line, and using an antiseptic mouthwash if recommended. Following the specific care plan that Dr. Lovelace provides is essential to control the disease.
Dental Procedures
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a permanent tooth replacement solution. It consists of a titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. A custom-made crown is then attached to the post, providing a replacement that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.
What is a denture implant?
Denture implants, also known as implant-supported dentures, are a more stable alternative to traditional dentures. A few dental implants are placed in the jawbone to serve as secure anchors for a full or partial denture. This prevents the slipping and discomfort associated with conventional dentures.
What is a soft tissue graft?
A soft tissue graft, or gum graft, is a procedure used to treat gum recession. During this procedure, tissue is taken from the roof of your mouth or another source and is grafted onto the receded gum area. This helps to cover exposed tooth roots, reduce sensitivity, and prevent further gum loss and bone deterioration.
What is LANAP?
LANAP®, or Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure, is an advanced, less invasive treatment for periodontal disease. It uses a specialized dental laser to remove diseased tissue and kill bacteria from deep periodontal pockets without harming healthy tissue. This promotes natural gum reattachment and regeneration.
